      Interval

      Art direction / book
      2022

The book Interval is a collaboration between photographer Martien Mulder (New York) and creatives Stef Bakker and Carsten Klein (Amsterdam). All three share a fascination with the force that lies in stillness. In 2020 Stef invited Martien and Carsten to embark on an extensive quest to reveal this force in Mulder’s images, editing from an archive of 25 years of photography, to ultimately create an object that in itself demonstrates this quality.

This book resonates with the Japanese concept of ma. Ma has been described as a pause in time, an interval, or emptiness in space. It speaks of void as opposed to object. It calls attention to the things that inform our experience and our emotional point of view, giving the stage to unassuming moments that are always there, just not fully seen.

The work falls midway between figurative and abstract, between photography and collage. It evokes questions that don’t need answers, leaving room for quietude.
